Help Phone Display Resolution Help?

Hi all,

I've just got a new phone which has a higher resolution than my old one:

OLD: 720 x 1280 pixels (~326 ppi) - 4.5"
NEW: 1080 x 1920 pixels (~401 ppi pixel density) - 5.5"

However, when holding the devices side-by-side, it appears that I'm not able to fit/display more information on the screen of the newer phone.

Text wraps/new lines start at the same point in a sentence on phone phones, for example.

Does this mean that the larger physical size of the screen (4.5" vs. 5.5") of the new phone has negated the larger screen resolution?

Is there a way to change my phone so I can fit more on the screen?

Thanks!

Try a different launcher, you can tweak some settings. The resolution has nothing to do with what fits on the screen.

Thanks, will try a different launcher. I'm not referring to the home page screens - I mean the screen in general, like in a browser, or other apps.

The resolution has nothing to do with what fits on the screen.

Surely the resolution is the main thing that determines how much can fit on the screen?

Doesn't the resolution refer to the pixel width of the screen? I.e. the screen displays 1080 pixels across its width?

A larger resolution of 2000 would be able to display more content?

Thanks.

Your thinking in terms of a PC monitor, Android just puts more pixels for crisper images

Thanks for clearing that up!

That is annoying as I was hoping a bigger screen (in terms of inches) would allow me to see more of a webpage or my inbox, than my smaller screen phone - but instead it's just displaying the same amount of stuff, but bigger!

Is the ppi pixel density the measurement of how much can fit on the screen?

Thanks.

No that would be the DPI, you can change the DPI and display a lot more on your screen. However this requires changing a build.prop line which requires root....

My phone is 5.7" 1280x720 and came with 320 DPI, I always root and DPI is something I always change, turned it down to 280 and the difference is very noticeable.

Yes, definitely prefer the first 3.

Can't believe the phones don't have the ability to switch the DPI enabled/built-in as default.

Thanks.

Yup. The website detects the device as a phone for example, hence the same thing is displayed. However there are still some settings you can tweak without needing root. For example, some browsers have a setting to adjust thr minimum font size viewable. This would adjust how much text you can see in the webpage since a bigger screen with higher res can show smaller fonts more clearly. Sadly this doesn't work on all websites.
