Help Phone doesn't charge when turned on

Got a problem. My wife bought a ZTE Avid 4G yesterday from MetroPCS (against my suggestions), and since 4:30 am this morning the phone will not charge while it is turned on, The Battery status says discharging and the icon doesn't indicate it is charging either. However when the phone is turned off it will charge.

It seems like a Software issue, if so is there a fix out for it or not?

If it won't charge normally when powered on, since it's a recent purchase, I'd say take it back to Metro and have them swap it out. If they don't believe you, have them test it, and laugh at them when they see it still doesn't charge.

I've never heard of something like this before, thus I can't quite recall what could cause it. Is the light near the top right corner red when plugged in?
