Help Phone getting Warm - Yes I read other threads

How do you check the temperature of your phone? Is there an app I have to use?

The last few weeks, my phone will get extremely warm in my pocket up against my leg even though I have not used the phone for hours.
 
the only way i am aware of to check the temp on your device is if you find a system monitoring app that supports that feature but you need to also see if your phone has a cpu / battery temp sensor.
 
Most likely do to a combination of things.

1.)Do you have a case on it? This could cause the phone to hold more heat as a case basically insulates the body of the phone and causes it to be warmer.

2.)Go into the settings-->apps-->all apps (tab) and make sure you select any apps you don't use and disable them if its possible on your handset. My pantech allows me to disable a lot of apps that it comes loaded with.

3.)Do you have your phone rooted? If you do you could use SetCPU to lower your CPU speed and voltage (with compatible kernel be very careful manually setting voltages and keep nandroid backups of good settings) when not in use so it stays cooler. If you have root you can also use root explorer and rename the apk files for the apps that you never use so they never can open randomly (.apks are usually in the /system/app/ folder).

I personally don't have this phone so I can't give you specifics, but in most cases the processor is being kept busy by an app that is running constantly if your phone is getting warm. I believe all android 4 and above have the ability to disable apps in the app drawer so use it.

Most of the time cell phone temps are monitored through battery temperatures. Most CPU apps probably have a battery temperature reading. I'm sure there are battery temperature apps on google play store though that just read temps.
 
I do not have the GPS on. I have a very thin silcone case for it. I have also disabled all of the apps that I could. I assume data is on all the time.

It just started doing this a few weeks ago. I have not even installed any new apps lately.

All of a sudden while I am teaching, I can feel my leg get really warm.
 
The temperature reported by the
many battery monitoring apps agreed closely with the thermometers that I taped to the backs of my RAZR MAXX, Rezound, and LG Spectrum. I use the "Battery Booster" app with its alarm set to beep at 100 degrees.

Some of the apps can continuously display the temperature on the status bar. I use "Cool Tool" which can display a ton of other information on the status bar, and can even display graphs there.

You could check the CPU usage with an app like "Watchdog" to see if a runaway app is causing the heat.

An app like "My Data Manager" might show whether there is high data traffic from email or some other app even when you are not using your phone.
 
My phone gets to 104 routinely. I have even seen it get to 115 occasionally. I sent my first max back for getting to 115 routinely. I have found that lowering the screen brightness helps some. Screen brightness as well as data transfer are usually the culprits. Id say that something is using data in the background.

It will protect against immediate heat damage, but high operating temperature increases the wear on all the electronic components (particularly the battery) and hurts their lifespan. High temperatures are probably the single worst thing you can do with a consumer Li-Ion battery.
 
Plus heat can effect performance because the kernel throttles back the CPU at 104 degrees and throttles it back even farther at 113 degrees. That's why it's common to see a RAZR MAXX at 104 or 113 degrees.
 
My phone gets warm sometimes, even quite warm. I just reboot it. Fixes it every time so far. Some process running I suppose. Try a reboot.
 
My rooted pantech marauder sitting on a carpeted floor (without a case) with my laptop tethered to it watching netflix stays at about 93F. Thats with a dual core S4 snapdragon running between 384Mhz and 486Mhz with setcpu set in the ondemand throttling. I have no case and I keep all extra apps off/removed. My stratosphere would stay about 98F when tethered running between 200 and 800Mhz with a case on it. Temps vary by phone but the best thing you can do is keep apps closed you don't need and root your phone and use setcpu to lower your speed as much as possible when not in use. My stratosphere felt slow set at 400Mhz max but this s4 processor can do all my basic multitasking and act as a nice 4g to wifi router without a hiccup at 486Mhz max.

Generally the more powerful the processor the more heat (there are a couple exceptions). I could easily understand a new RAZR or RAZR MAXX reaching over 110F if apps are running and the CPU is kept busy. People expect Motorola to cram a dual core 1.2Ghz processor and all these other chipsets and battery in a .3 inch thin package that fits in there hand and still have it stay room temperature while insulated in their pocket all day? My newer 28nm S4 MSM8960 in a larger package (pantech marauder) even gets warm if its left at a full 1.5Ghz with apps keeping it busy.

the App called 'Android System Info' (by Electricsheep) tells you the battery temp in its system tab under battery (mine shows 29C - 86F) but not CPU temp as I don't think Maxx has sensors for that. It also gives you a lot of info about your phone.
 
You are correct. It's not YOUR phone. There was an update for something that had to change something. I have 2 Maxx's (1 mine, 1 son's). Both started getting really warm in the past couple weeks and the battery has been draining unusually fast. I don't know what has changed, but the fact that both my phones are doing the same thing, leads me to believe it has to be some software that was updated that broke something. You are not alone.

Ditto that.....for the last couple weeks my battery is draining much faster, and several times I have had to stop using the phone because it was becoming to warm to hold comfortably.
