Phone goes on auto mute

My Razr HD Maxx is just going into a mute mode while I'm in the middle of a conversation. I can hear the other end, but they can't hear me and I can't get the sound to come back on from my end. I went to the Verizon store and they told me to try taking the phone back to factory settings...which is about like having to go get a new drivers license. Has anyone else had this happen? If I get a new phone I still have to set it all up again. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Welcome to Android Forums. Did you do a Factory Data Reset after you installed the last system upgrade ... days, weeks, or months ago?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but a reset may not even help. My son had a Droid 4 that did this, nothing seemed to fix it. I sent him my perfectly fine D4, it NEVER did this the whole time I had it. He fired it up and it started doing the same exact thing immediately. He went and got a new SIM card, still did it. A whole bunch of factory resets later, a few "battery pulls" later, a few safe modes later, a few uninstalling every app later it still does it.
I was thinking of sending my current Razr HD when my Moto X gets here but now am disheartened to hear that it may still be an issue. This is the first I've heard of the problem on the Razr's. UGH.
It somehow has to be tied to his account, that's all I can come up with now. I don't know how and it makes no sense but he can't get his phone to work. I was texting w/him earlier today and he did say he's been using Skype, that works. Unreal.

I didn't do the reset yet. Now I'm disheartened hearing your son's problem seems to follow him. I guess I need to bite the bullet and reset. I love the phone other than this new glitch. The battery life is awesome for a droid. I'll reset this weekend and report back if it starts doing it again. You make me think it's related to an app we're using that has our names attached to it. And all the apps they put on the phone that I don't even use...ugh! Thaks for your response guys.

When did yours start doing this? What was the last app you installed or updated?? Grasping at straws but maybe you guys have the same something-or-other installed...
I really hope a reset works for you!!

Yes. A Factory Data Reset is recommended. That will create a clean base upon which to build. It may not solve the problem. It does solve a LOT of them.

I assume you are running Jelly Bean. After creating that clean environment if you run into a similar problem you could try running in Safe Mode (disabling all apps that you added without uninstalling them) and if the problem stops it is one of the apps you added.

Good luck.

I know this is months later but I have the Razr HD Maxx as well and it does the same thing. Very annoying. I hard reset multiple times and switched the SIM card.

I am just waiting it out for a good replacement. Considering the new Droid Maxx but want to see what the S5 is going to be.

The only temporary fix is to tap the speaker button and then put it back on ear piece. That seems to work. Just very annoying.

Yes! I am having this exact same problem. It just started on my phone last week. tapping speaker button on and off works for me as well. Also, I have noticed that it doe NOT occir if I am using my earphones with a mic.

I am planning to back up my phone and factory reset it tonight. Has this helped for anyone?

Make sure you uncheck the option to back-up settings to Google. And when you sign back in do not allow it to back them up. I swear there is something that gets backed up that is messing up.

After multiple resets/no backing up etc. my son's seems to be working OK now...knock on wood...
