Hi,

I hope I can get some help.

Today i felt my samsung phone get very hot in my pocket, looked at it and it was shut off and wouldn't start.

Got home and plugged in the charger, still the phone won't start BUT the phone gets hot when the charger is in if the battery is inside(the phone gets hot around where the metal from the phone touhes the battery.

Any idea what the problem could be? I hope to God it's the battery which I already ordered a new one of.

Just some extra info such as are you rooted and did you drop the phone and have you been playing games on the device or watching movies. And what kind of phone is this how old is the battery

Some answers:

The phone is a 9205 Mega, I did not drop the phone, atleast not today(I once dropped it but not that far and it is encased in a "wallet"). It's NOT rooted and has the latest firmware, I bought it in late December. (got it early January) the battery is the original battery.

I often watch movies/tv shows on it and play games. I had played some games some hours earlier.

It had not become wet recently.

P.s please dont move this post, as I like to get input from the whole community and not just from Mega users.

If after trying a new battery, and it's still getting mad hot won't turn on. Very likely something has gone short. Is it under warranty? I had a Nokia E72 do the same thing, got abnormally hot and wouldn't turn on, but that was under warranty and so was replaced. If you bought the Mega in December, it should be within Samsung's one year warranty.

Did you pull out the battery? If not then 1st pull out the battery, sim, and SD card for like 30mins then put them all back in and let us know what happens.

Yeah I ordered a new battery, the battery is sorta rare so the local phone store didn't have one. I removed the battery and let them cool down, then when I put it back in the phone started to get hot again.. the phone didnt start though.

Oh okay, so you're still waiting to receive the new battery? It may either be due to a faulty battery if not then your phone maybe damaged Internally and may require a new main board or a complete swap for a new phone.

Thanks Tsepz I sorta did the same conclusion :) But I was more wondering what you guys think the actual reason is. Battery OR faulty phone?

Could be either. A faulty battery that keeps on receiving charge would indeed get hot. If the phone is faulty, it would get hot as well.

Maybe the question that should be asked is, which is the source of the heat? The phone or the battery?

I'm thinking it's the phone. From what you were describing sounds the same as my Nokia, and that wasn't the battery. It was only a few weeks old and the carrier I bought it from just replaced it. This is a LiPo battery and if they become overheated, they can be potentially quite dangerous and pyrotechnic.

I'm thinking it's the battery. The charge control chip is in the battery - except for Nokia phones, which have the charge chip in the phone itself.

Wow, you really do learn something new everyday. I had no idea of this.

Lets see how the new battery goes then.

Well guys, received my new battery today and.. NO go. Apparently it's the phone that's busted. Still had warranty though so going to send it in.
