Help Phone has some WiFi - DNS problems

Hello,

First of - I tried to search the forum for anything regarding my problem, but the most important keyword - 'dns' gets ignored by the search. I didn't see anything regarding this in the FAQ.

Anyway..

There seems to be some problem with my phone's ability to connect to wifi successfully. Well, it does connect, I can ping LAN devices from my phone and I can even open up google if i input IP address directly. However it seems to be unable to resolve dns addresses. I tried pinging dns servers and they responded fine.

The router I am connecting to is E3200. These are the wireless settings on it (even though i'm pretty sure they are not the problem, since connection works fine) - http://i.imgur.com/LZzZE.png. And here is the network setup - http://i.imgur.com/BzhVE.png, as you can see - it's pretty default.

I will add, that my previous phone - Nokia N900 (Maemo5) connects to the same wireless network just fine, as well as about 3 different laptops, so i'm sure the router works correctly. Interestingly though - my roommate has Samsung Galaxy S II and it has the same problem I do.

Also - I have not yet tried connecting to any other wifi spots, haven't had the chance.

Do you have any suggestions where to look for solution of this? If I need to provide more information, please tell me.

Not sure who you are "with", but it's sometimes worth going on the specific server forums to ask.

That being said, you might try changing your "network mode" from Mixed to either N (if everything you have can run N) or G (if not) just to see if you get a better connection. Also, do you have anything -- like Sonos for example -- that's running on a specific channel? You might try selecting a channel to see if that works. In other words, not "Auto".

Samsung radios are notoriously "weak" (compare with Motorola for example) so make sure you have a solid signal.

I have had problems in the past with specific devices (including desktops) not getting results from the given DNS servers. What I have done is in the router config, enter in Google's public DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) for what the router gives out to your clients and see if that helps you out. The DNS servers that would come through from my internet provider would be flaky on occasion and a similar issue arise for me. It can't hurt to try and even if it doesn't fix that particular issue, I've had great luck with leaving them as my primary and secondary dns servers.

Well, I tried updating firmware, changing the router settings around, setting up Google's DNS, none of it really helped. Then I removed the saved wifi connection from my phone, re-added it and it is working now.

I'm not really sure what was it that helped me fix it, because last step alone didn't help before, but I'm just happy it works now :D Won't need to waste my mobile connection anymore.

Thanks for the replies.
