Phone icon in lower left corner

I just came over from owning for two years an HTC Incredible. I have to get use to the size but other than that enjoying the advancements. My question is the green phone icon in the lower left hand corner will show a square with a number in it. I thought this was to indicate a new voice mail. Once I had a 4 showing with no voice mails and could not get rid of the 4. Another time I had a 1 showing again with no voice mail. Does anyone know what the numbers mean and how to delete them or set it so I do not even get the numbers.

I believe it's your missed calls. It should clear when you view your call log.
