Phone Insurance

Hi,

Wondered if anyone had any info on this...

Basically last year I was due an upgrade on my Orange UK contract so I decided to upgrade to a blackberry but before using it decided to sell it and upgrade to a nexus 1. I've had phone insurance for ages now and decided to keep it with the reasoning being that if I lost/damaged my N1, I would at least be able to get a replacement Blackberry as this is the phone I had originally upgraded to.
It struck me the other day though that if I did however try and make a claim at any point there might be a bit of an issue. Presumably if I were to ring up and say my phone is lost, Orange would block my old phone which to their mind would be the original Blackberry. Obviously having sold the phone ages ago, I would hate for the new owner to have their phone mysteriously blocked. Also, the fact that I've been using an N1 for over a year now, would Orange simply be able to see this and deny me any kind of replacement?

If any one has any advice around this it would be much appreciated as it seems pointless to continue to pay

When you take the insurance out, you're taking it out on the specific phone you purchased via Orange for the duration of your contract. Think of it like Car insurance, if you insure a car, sell it, then buy another, you wouldn't be insured for the new car.

If you sell that phone to buy another, you'd need to either take out insurance seperately on the new handset, OR call Orange to explain the situation and see if they'd be willing to transfer the insurance. As far as I'm aware, they don't stock the N1 so I doubt they would unfortunately.

However, if your N1 broke and you tried to claim for a new Blackberry, they'd probably ask for the blackberry back to repair before they sent you a new one. The only way around this would be to say it had been lost or stolen in which case they'd need a police report and they would block the IMEI.

Although claiming it had been lost or stolen and obtaining a police report for that reason is obviously classed as Insurance Fraud.

Edit - They take a note of the IMEI assigned to you when you take out the contract so they have it without you giving it to them anyway.

I don't know if it's current on orange, but I bought an lg vortex back in november for my step daughter and last month took it away from her. We put an old razor on the line, then it got lost.i called vzw to se e what my options were and the ins had carried over to the new device and I was able to make a claim.

if the guy who bought the blackberry is already using it, they wouldn't be able to block the IMEI would they? That seems like it'd be FAR too easy for someone to sell a phone, claim it's stolen and get a new one.

Is this definitely true? When I upgraded the instructions I were given were to (rather than simply use my old sim) register my new sim supplied with the upgrade and also supply them with the IMEI number of the new phone? Seems pointless for them to ask for this if they already have it registered to my account.

Going from my experience, I've never had to give my IMEI number when I've upgraded. The SIM maybe, but they've always confirmed the IMEI number when I've called to do it.

According to a friend of mine who worked for O2, they can tell which IMEI you're using anyway
