Root Phone is lagging

Hi everyone!

Many of you helped walk me through rooting my phone, which I did successfully. I know that this phone has a good processor and a wonderful screen but it is so laggy!!

I've quarantined a bunch of the bloatware using "App Quarantine" but there are so many seemingly unnecessary processes going on. I'm using Go Launcher EX and love it and still see the stock processes running even after I force close them.

What should I do to help this?

What should I do to help this?

One of things I ran into was the need to punt back to v3 then OTA back up to v6. This solved many issues I have had.

In general, the lg phones seem to have a lot of crap running others dont. We may see that go away with a non-stock based rom,.

What processes are running (take a screenshot if you prefer) and what are you trying to do when you lag? Some apps agent jiving with this phone, so knowing what you're working with will help.

I think that should be all of them. Might have missed one trying to line up the different shots but don't think so. Help is much appreciated!!

Thank you in advance.

I'd freeze voicemail, social, mobile Hotspot, world time and sync service (unless you use backup assistant). Vmail is visual voicemail and social is for the widget that shows your social media feeds.

Check the 'apps you can freeze' thread for a full list... Everything in that thread can be frozen with no adverse effects. Generally, if there's an icon other than the Android, its added and not part of the OS. Anything added can be frozen. I'd freeze music too, but you'll need a music player.

I just figured out how to quarantine processes using App Quarantine and did all of them that were on that list.

Still noticeably laggy and using lots of the CPU + Memory in general. Some processes don't seem to quit even when I force close them and quarantine them, .com.lge.mobilehotspot.ui for example.

You're probably going to need to get an app like Titanium Backup or Rom Toolbox (i use this one) to "FREEZE" the apps. Freezing is a root process that prohibits the app from starting... i don't know what quarantining in that app does, but it sounds like it kills the app, but doesn't prevent it from starting again.

your problem is go launcher. This phone doesnt like it and it's never going to run good. I used go launcher for over 8 months and tried to stick with it on the spectrum and at first it ran ok but there was an update some months back that made it lag and it has since. I try it out here and there and it's never been fixed. Use a different launcher and your lag will go away. TSF shell runs perfect with absolutely no lag at all. There are others as well.

Thanks. Will try and report back.

EDIT: Downloaded and checked. It says all of the apps I quarantined are frozen so I have no idea how they are running still. It's not a big deal though. Most of the unwanted processes are not running now, it's just laggy in general for some reason. Maybe like IMUcarmen suggests I need a new launcher.

Can you recommend a free one that runs well?

I'm a launcher junkie and have tried most of them. The ones I've found runs best are SPB shell, TSF shell, ADW ex, Launcher pro, and FTL. There are others that run pretty good but I don't want to throw too many on you at once.

I'm liking ADW so far, seems much smoother but I can't figure out how to edit themes or settings. Can I still use the go launcher sms program and others if I keep them installed as well as go launcher? Like have ADW be my home screen but use launcher apps?

EDIT: The answer is yes, which is really cool. I'm going to try another one though because the app drawer is far worse than go launcher's.

The free adw is no where near as good as the paid one. That's why I said adw ex. Actually of all the launchers out there adw ex has the smoothest app drawer in the business. It's perfect.perhaps you miss having the extra features you get with go. But really that stuff is pointless and serves no great purpose.

I bought the pro. The lag is gone. I need to figure out some stuff now. I hope I can resize widgets and icons. We'll see. Anyone is was worth it for $3 and change.

Weird. Give it a reboot and see if that helps. Sometimes after you freeze a bunch of apps, it's good to dump the RAM and let it load up apps again

You can resize a widget by long pressing on it until you see the 'crop' type box around it. Then drag it in the directions you want. I do this a lot with the 'superclock 2x1' from Beautiful Widgets to make it 3x1.

Be forewarned with ADW, I've encountered random reboots, which may or may not be ADW-specific. It could be the Beautiful Widgets I'm using, but I've had many crashes and reboots that went away when I removed ADW. Shame too, because I love how customizable it is. :/

Are you just rooted? Or did flash cwm too?

I didn't flash the cwm, just rooted.

@MrB206: Thanks for the tips. Everything is a lot smoother. I can't use the go launcher widgets which stinks, but I'll find replacements. I need to find a good calendar and clock widget now.

My fav calendar widget is Jorte, because it allows you to mark something as 'completed': https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.johospace.jorte&hl=en It's not the most visually appealing, so....

I also use Business Calendar (got it when it was the app of the day @ Amazon) because I like how the widget looks: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=netgenius.bizcal . I have the paid version, so I don't know how good the free version is, but you might not mind the free version.

As for clock, I use 'super clock' from Beautiful Widgets: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.levelup.beautifulwidgets . Worth it. It has toggles, battery and weather widgets, so it's worth the $3 (or however much it cost)

I haven't experienced much lag with mine. I am using GO Launcher and GO SMS only....nothing else running from GO not even extra plugins in the SMS. exDialer for the directory and dialer theming.

I think if you want to go with GO make sure you keep your install of GO as slim as you can. Don't go for all the plugins

I use android pro widgets which has a nice calender widget. It also has a ton of other widgets but I dont use them.

i like holo launcher as well and used it for a couple weeks recently but it's just not as smooth as it could be yet.

There is sometimes a small lag when opening contacts, texts, etc. but ADW Ex makes this lag just a general pause instead of bad graphics which is so much more preferable. It's nice to not have graphics transitioning look slow and choppy.

I still feel like in general something doesn't add up with the specs of this phone and the way it performs. I mean an iPhone 4S has less everything I believe and it super smooth always. I still love my phone, just saying.

Yea, ADW has a lag, unless you tweak the CPU to run faster. If you set the governor to 'lagfree', you should see some 'lagginess' removed, even if you underclock it. The 'on demand' governor that's default is jumpy and can lead to lagging with big resource apps like ADW, which might explain what you experienced.

I underclock to 1.2, run 'lagfree' governor and don't have any performance issues. Saves battery life too.
