Help Phone keeps turning off when not plugged in.

I have my HTC thunderbolt and I have a problem with my phone. I plug my phone to charge and its 20 percent let's say and I let it down to keep charging and when I pick it up again its 100 percent after 10 minutes but after opening a few apps. Anyone knows why that happens?
