Help phone keypad doesn't return

My wife has inherited my daughter's Droid. When she makes or receives a call and is ready to finish or needs to enter numbers for a response, the keypad doesn't automatically return when she takes the phone away from her face. She can pull down the call-in-progress icon from the notification bar, but that's sometimes a problem, especially if she needs to access the keypad in the middle of a call.

I can't find any setting for this, but I'm pretty sure the keypad should automatically come back up when she takes the phone away from her face.

Can anyone help?
