Phone not charging

Rgarner

Android Expert
I was stupid enough to let someone else borrow my Samsung Galaxy S5 and charger. Now it says that it stopped charging to prevent damage and to use the original charger. That is the original........
..........

How do I reboot? If you mean shutting it off and going through the startup process, I've done that and the best I get is the lightning bolt or else 0% with the plugin symbols. However, one time it showed that something apparently official was downloading but then it stopped. This was with a picture of the green Android guy. I've also taken off the back and cleaned all the contacts I can think of but nothing works.

Now it isn't doing anything. It was fine this morning before somebody got grease on the screen and jelly on the back. I wonder if there could be some internal damage that isn't noticeable. Would a new battery help? Could I go ahead and use a charger and cord that aren't oem?

Ok well if it was doing an update and then died...... that's not good.

And you can try using other cords and see what works. Should not really harm you're device.

Jelly? Yeah if something was spilt on it that's not good either.

Actually, I might have stopped the download process by accident. Is there any way to restart it? What would it do if it finished?

If its finished the update download, it should have given you the options to install now, or defer it till later, or maybe set a time for it to install.

If the download was aborted, go into settings and do the check the update option, that should resume or restart it

I can't do that because the phone's not doing anything. I can't get it to come on and it doesn't make a sound. There's not even the little light at the top left.

Have you tried another USB charger and cord yet? As I've suggested previously.

If it's completely flat and won't do anything at all, it might take a while to show activity when plugged into a charger, like on-screen or LED charging indications.

Yeah if the battery is really dead, it might take a bit before you notice it charging.

That's good if it was only downloading. But if you see green android guy that usually means it was installing the update, if so that's not good

At least there's a little progress. Now it's doing the boot sequence at least but it still shows 0%. I'm probably going to have to get a new charge cord and/or wall wart. Is non oem ok? Btw, I took apart the charger and cord and left the phone's back cover off with the battery out overnight, which might have helped. If it comes on at all this way, it's not the battery, right?

Not necessarily, if the battery is faulty it will fire up but immediately detect that it is low on power and shut down. Phil

Well, I finally got to try a brand new battery. The phone is working which is how I'm typing this, but it isn't charging, just the opposite. I have tried the old and new charge cords and wall warts, but there's apparently not much difference. Why is it not charging?

Now I plugged in an old S5 with the new charger and an even older battery. I'm typing this from that. It claims the old battery, which I thought was dead, is charging, at 64%, and when I took out and reinserted the new battery in the newer phone, its charge supposedly drppped from 31% to 21. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

Thank goodness the old phone with the old battery is magically working or I wouldn"t be able to do this. That's great but it still leaves me in the lurch about the new phone and the other two batteries. Did the new phone maybe become defective somehow?

by new phone, you mean the s5?

if so the s5 is not new. it maybe new out of the box, but its been sitting around someplace all these years. its battery will deteriorate over time even though it has not been used. i'm not really surprised you are having difficulties with the s5. its pretty old by today's standards, but i'm glad you have at least a working phone.

It's a long story. I have an "older" S5 which stopped working. Then I got a "newer" one. It recently stopped working. I tried it with a new battery and it woke up, but wouldn't charge. I went back to the "old" phone and miraculously it started working again, even with the old battery it came with, which hadn't been working. You're right. At least I have a phone.

The new cord I have works but it's too short. I decided to try with the second phone's original cord, which is long enough. Of course it doesn't charge right. I guess this means that I'll have to charge with the short cord and switch to the long one when it's done, for now. Can I use any old Android cord or does it have to be specific to the S5? I want to get a fairly long cord instead of this short one.

He probably switched to keep your charger and give you a shitty one its possible check the charger to ensure its genuine

No, it's the one, all right. His phone is the LG X Charge, which has a way better battery. There's no way we could switch chargers. It'd probably blow up mine. Also, they're different colors, and mine has a special mark on it. Maybe he just managed to screw up the cord somehow. He's even worse with phones than I am.

If your phone is note charging then you should have some mentioned problems regarding the same , thek out this list first :
1-your charger is working properly or not
2-check whether charger is insearted properly or not
3-check whether your mobile charging port is working or not
4-chech your battery whether in good condition or not.

Just today I finally got around to opening a care package from another AF member, great Easter gifts! I plugged in new wall wart and cord to the very short power strip, with 6 outlets, which I am now using with the "old" S5. Immediately it showed that it was charging, and I let it go for a while. Eventually I switched it on and it went through the boot sequence but then did that sort of chirp about plugging it in because low battery (it was 14%). I decided to take some screenshots of the apps on board just in case. Then I powered it off to let it charge some more. When I came back it was dead again, absolutely nothing. I tried unplugging and replugging, taking it all apart and reassembling it, going back to the original battery. None of it worked. Meanwhile, the screenshots I took and which should have been saved to google photos automatically are nowhere to be found. I know because I checked with the "old" phone which somehow got resurrected recently. What's the deal?
