Help Phone numbers to SD Card - Such A Simple Thing To Want To Do!

JEJeffrey

Lurker
I am probably going to attract some flak for this, because I know it is a dumb question - but I am going crazy trying to find how to move all my telephone contacts onto my SD card.

(The reason I want to do it is that HTC Sync has suddenly stopped recognising the handset. I have followed a lot of detailed advice from HTC tech guys about reinstalling everything, but the problem is still there, and I suspect my next step ought to be a hard reset. I don't want to lose all my telephone numbers).

I have seen advice elsewhere about syncing contacts via my gmail account, but I'm not aware that I even have one, or how to find it and use it if I do. Surely there ought to be a much simpler way of transferring telephone contact details from the phone memory directly to the SD card? It was a menu option on my old Nokia brick, but we seem to have gone backwards in user-friendliness. I can see lots of folders on the phone in 'My computer' when I connect via USB cable, but none of them seem to contain contact details.

Of course, I may be missing something very basic. Quite prepared to be told I am!

Open the people or contact app and select import / export and export to sd this makes a vcf file ( if i remember correctly) of your contacts which you can transfer to your pc if you want.

As for google account. Do you have a gmail account if so log on via pc and check you contacts within the gmail section.

I am sure you need a gmail account to buy apps from the market.

Hole this helps :D

Sim contacts are very limited. Cannot link pictures etc.

If you're dead set on not using Google contacts (shame, its really great) then you can replace htc sync with.myphone explorer

Most grateful for everyone's advice so far. You're quite right, I must have set up a Gmail account when I first got the phone so that I could buy apps (something I haven't done for a long time). I have managed to unearth the details of my Gmail account and log on to it, but there are no contacts listed there.

However, I suspect I may have been guilty of incorrect terminology - when I said 'contacts' I just meant names and telephone numbers, whereas I suspect that most people are referring to email addresses (I rarely if ever use my phone for emails, so don't put a high priority on having access to my directory of email addresses). So my question should probably have been 'how do I back up my telephone directory?'. I still don't know!

Export your contacts to sd from people. Then import them and it asks what to import them as (phone, sim, Google). Choose Google.

Contacts are contacts. That's all there is to It

I'm trying to do the same thing but the VCF file is only exporting 566 contacts. That is only my a-h listings. Anyone know how to get my entire contact list exported to the SD card? plenty of space on my card.

thanks
