Phone only (like Blackberry) ??????

Ive been a Blackberry guy for 5 years.
I made the switch from Storm 2 to the DX.

I miss two things from my Blackberry.

1) PHONE ONLY.
I would switch my BB to "phone only" at night when I went to bed. So I wasnt awakened for any messages, but did if I received a phone call... Im a State Trooper and I get called out every so often so this worked great.

CANT FIND ANY APP OR SETTING TO MIMIC THIS FROM MY BB!!!!!!

2) BB messenger.
Wish I still had the "d" or "r" when I sent a message to someone to know if they got it or if they read the message.

????? any messenger like that and Id switch to it in a heart beat.

The stock messaging app ha received and read notices. Just go into settings in the messaging app and turn them on. As for phone only, there's apps you can get that mute all sounds like Sweet Dreams - Android app on AppBrain. I don't know if this allows you to silence all notifications as I haven't messed with it but it's worth a shot.

as far as using an app to see if someone has read your text or not I dont think there is any... They do come preoloaded with an app called "talk" tho... it seems like a messenger for gmail and you can chat with others who have gmail accounts and are signed on... not the same as bbm, not nearly as good

my android (moment with 2.2) doesnt have a stock messanger that allows you to see if people have read my texts or not. But I also use chompsms for my text messaging, I love the ability to customize my phone to the fullest

You can download ping from the market but I don't know if it does the sent and read. As for the "phone only" mode, why not just put the phone to silent or airplane mode?

If I switch it to silent or airplane mode? would is still ring? or be silent for EVERYTHING....?

It wouldn't ring, it wouldn't even receive calls in airplane mode, it cuts off all radios. That won't do you any good.

There are many good apps out there to setup ringer profiles that can emulate what you had on the Blackberry. Timeriffic is can automate this based on time, and so can apps like Tasker and Locale. I believe Settings Profiles is more of a manual operation, which Tasker could be also.

BB Messenger is obviously specific to Blackberries, but if there is something out there that provides the same functionality on Android, it would likely require that both the sender and recipient be using the app, so you would have to get the entire circle of people you would communicate with to use it. This is the main drawback of any proprietary messaging system.

There are things to be missed about a BlackBerry, this I understand.

I don't know of any app for delivery or read of texts, but maybe I have a suggestion for phone calls...an app named Setting Profiles.

What you can do is set rules with conditions (if this happens) and actions (do this). For instance, you can make a rule to active a certain profile, e.g. a loud ring, when a given number calls, even if all alerts are set to silent. I've not used the app extensively and can't say I've had the opportunity to try the "loud-ring-in-the-middle-of-the-night" rule, but every other rule I've set works quite well. Might be worth a try at least.

This is such a pain in the A**.

The problem is I work swing shift. So I cant just set any of these apps so Mondays after 10pm the phone rings only or the phone operates normal if I work till 2am on wednesday.
If I end up working late due to an investigation and then my phone switches and I miss text or instant messages.

Sometimes I work days or nights on Monday. Sometimes I get home at 5pm or 2am.

I was REALLY hoping an app was out there that I could activate when I go to bed that allows ONLY the phone to ring during incoming calls but EVERTHING else says silent during the night until i turn everything back on in the morning.

Simple request............. It sounds like im screwed. :(

Use something like Quick Settings, and set the notification sounds to 0. Then when you go to bed, you can open it, click volume control, and toggle the "use ringer volume for notifications" off so all you hear is the phone ringing instead of every text/email/etc. Then when you wake up check the box and notification sounds are back on :) You could also just use the regular sound settings but that would take a bit more navigation to get to. You can also turn down the media/system sounds/etc if you wanted as well.

I came from BB, and missed the "Phone Only" as well. I found "Profile Manager" in the Market. It has 5 option that are user settable. One if them is called "Custom", and I have this perform the ring only function. I have this a widget on my Home Sceen and now I have the exact same function as my 9700 did. :)

Hope it helps.

.

Download KALOER CLOCK. It has the same features as Bedside in BB. You can set how to handle SMS and calls when in Clock mode. It can be set to recognize charge/not charge and react accordingly. PLus a host of other settings.

Very nice app.

Can't answer the message delivery notification bit, but the other option on the phone calls is just to divert calls to another phone at bedtime (I'm kind of assuming you have a landline near to the bed I suppose) and leave the DX out of earshot. Using AnyCut you could set a home screen shortcut to Call Forwarding to set the call divert up easily on the DX every time.

Steve.

kik messenger gives sent, delivered, and read notifications. It works good sometimes and sometimes it lags and gets out of sync on the delivered/read notifications.

Does it deliver your messages quickly?
I was reading the reviews. some said it took an hour for a message to get delivered?

Far superior 911 support mostly, that and POTS is still the most efficient, reliable system out there.

If I had children or elderly/sick/disabled people in my home, I wouldn't think of being without basic landline service.

You can create different scenes. It is akin to a profile. Set the one up for WORK to recieve the notifcations how you want them. Set the one for Social to shut off all notifications except the phone. All you need to do is change the Scene when your are on or off duty.

It is a buily in part of HTC Sense, no app to D/L.

When I got to the sound settings of my phone. I can set notifications and ringer to the same volume. If I disable that. I can lower notificitions to mute and leave ringer on full.

Got a HTC Desire by the way.

May want to check out Audio Manager from the market. Put a widget on one of your screens. Open the widget and you can turn off all sounds you want and leave on only what you do want on. At night I leave on alarm and phone only. I have the pro version which lets you save profiles. One click on my screen for when I am asleep, another for work etc. Works great.
