.... Once it has started, it can be disconnected from the charger.
Samsung Galaxy Ace. Any ideas? TIA.

I was going to say that your battery might be dead, but you can use it after disconnecting, so that's not the case. I have no idea. Maybe try a factory reset?

You sir, are a phreaking genius. :D A factory reset has fixed it. Thank you.

Thanks for your post jerofld, after booting the battery was lasting the same amount of time as normal.

I spoke too soon. After the factory reset, the phone started normally a few times so I assumed that it was fixed. Now it's difficult to start it without the battery being charged, a few attempts are needed. The switch seems to be partly stuck in.

So do you think it's a hardware fault now? Perhaps the switch being stuck is causing the fault. Although it's hard to explain why it works when plugged in. We need House.

It is strange. When the battery is being charged, the phone can be started as easily as it should be. When the battery isn't being charged, sometimes the phone will start though it usually requires a few attempts.

Sounds like a potential hardware issue with your USB port which can happen and cause a range of random problems e.g navigation app randomly turning on, problems with charging, problems with basic phone operation. Often it can be dust so a clean with compressed air may help.....if not back to the shop to invoke warranty?
