I couldn't figure out how to do this either - I'd started adding contacts manually on the phone before setting up a Gmail account and I couldn't see any way to turn them into Google contacts. Ended up just deleting them and adding them in Gmail (on my PC) at which point they pushed to the phone without issue.
"What seems to have fixed it for me was going to the Contact app, hitting the menu button, then pressing Import/Export. I had it import vcards off the sd card, which seems to be how Verizon originally got the contacts into the phone."
So I did just that, moved them to the SD card, then moved them back. As soon as I did that the "...(unsynced)" business was replaced with "google contact" and all the contacts were in my Gmail account. Hope this helps.
Edit: Upon further investigation when you do that you end up making two contacts in one. You have the google one while the unsynced one is still there.
If its just for one contact certainly on my Dell Streak running 2.2.2 it is probably easiest to select 'share contact by email' and if you select your own email it will immediately send a vcard as attachement to your inbox which you can click on in your emails and adding to my contacts is done immediately, it then offers opportunity to merge contacts if required.
