Help Phone rarely recognizes earphone any more

HTC One M8. Had about 2 years. Not willing to trade in at this time. Phone jack has always worked as it was supposed to. A few weeks ago it started not recognizing when I plugged in the earbuds into the jack. It would take a few ins and outs to make it work. Then progressively more. Now, it takes several minutes and doesn't always work before I give up.

Is there a way to force android to play music to the phone jack regardless if the phone thinks there is anything plugged in? Any way to fix the issue besides a new phone or major repair? I have tried to clean the jack (both male and female parts) and no change. I hear a crackling when I put the jack in and out, but the phone does not acknowledgment that it was inserted.

Any help would be appreciated. I love my phone otherwise and feel a bit frustrated that my only option may be to buy a new phone... which means a $700 phone only lasted me 2 years. That's ridiculous.

The day will come when wireless will match the quality of a good wired pair, but it is not this day.

Have you tried with a different pair of earphones? It's possible that the problem is with them rather than the phone, so worth checking that before paying for a repair.

We have however passed the point where they are much better than a poor pair...

Of course it does depend what you are listening to... If you spend your time listening to spoken word podcasts your audiphonic requirements will be different to if you are listening to top quality flac audio.

(and anyone who listens to 128 kbps mp3 music files is going to get lousy audio either way)

Now back to the original question...
