Help Phone reboots with Transcend 32GB MicroSD

Newbie
Hi all, I bought a new 32GB Class 4 Transcend MicroSD card from a reputable computer retailer (in NZ) and I've discovered that it's causing my phone to randomly reboot once or twice a day. I've had the card out of my phone for 4 days now, and it hasn't rebooted once.

Do MicroSD cards need special formatting before inserting into the phone? I basically just unpackaged the new card, and put it directly into the phone. Afterwards, I hooked the phone up to my PC and used Kies to transfer about 15GB of MP3s. No applications are loaded on the card.

I'm just wanting to find out whether:

- The card is faulty
- The phone's card reader is faulty
- Preparation of the card is needed before inserting into the phone

Thanks in advance for any help.

I always format memory cards in the phone as soon as I put them in. I've found (over many years of experience) that some phones just won't play nice unless the card has been formatted in the phone. My 64gb SanDisk simply wouldn't work until I formatted it in the phone.

It really shouldn't make any difference but sometimes it just does. Try formatting the card in the phone then copying the files across again. If the phone still reboots I'd replace the card and try again.

Thanks for your replies. I'm now formatting the card in the phone - I've selected Unmount and then to Format the Micro SD card. I'll report back whether the phone starts rebooting or not in the next few days.

Ok, after about 18 hours since formatting the MicroSD card in my phone, it has rebooted again. Are there any diagnostic utilities I can run on the card from my PC? I'm now trying a 2GB Apacer MicroSD card to see what result I get with that.

It's looking worse than first thought :-( I have now tried both a 32gb Transcend MicroSD card, and a 2gb Apacer card. Both have caused the phone to reboot. Could there be a fault with the phone? It hasn't been rooted, and is running Android 2.3.6

does it reboot without the card(s)?
if not, then sounds like a fault in the card area. have you tried a factory reset? remove battery as well for few minutes after the reset.
i'd probably try another card that you KNOW works, one more time. grab one from a friend that is working in his phone.
i read that 2.3.6 has some bugs, i'm on 2.3.4 and working great.

Try testing with a couple of other external microSD card. Make sure no apps on the microSD. Have a look in the Settings/Manage Applications under the On SD tab. If there is a ticked mark beside the app, that means part of the app is in the microSD.

List down some apps you have so maybe someone have experience with certain apps causing issues can advise you. If nothing works, Led Hed is right. Might have to do factory reset and wipe cache. Use as last resort since it means you lose all settings and apps which have to be downloaded again. Don't worry about paid apps though. You won't be charge again.

Cheers

@led hed - interesting link - so this could be an unresolvable problem with 2.3.6? I may be able to borrow another 32GB MicroSD card, but not until next week.

@Russell Ng - have checked the Manage Apps section, and definitely don't have any apps (or part apps) installed on the MicroSD card. I've got the full list of installed apps in the photo below:

If you recently updated, then it might be a clashing of the old firmware with the new update. Unfortunately from what I read, no other option other than do factory reset and wipe cache. I did get some reboots after updates, but after using it for some time, doesn't happen. Which I think is due to the old cache being rewritten along the way.

So, wait awhile and see if anyone have your problem with the same apps you have on your phone. And if no news, you can still do a factory reset. If lucky, the problem might just go away like for mine.

Cheers

I finally got around to borrowing another MicroSD card. This is the 3rd card I've tried, and was a 4GB one. Unmounted it first and formatted it, and then left the phone sitting on my table. About 12 hours later, it rebooted. No apps are installed on the card and no other files are showing on the card. After formatting, the only folders that show up on the card (and they are empty folders) were LOST.DIR and .android secure. Is resetting the complete phone my only option now? :-(

I finally got around to the factory reset, and within an hour it had already rebooted after I inserted the MicroSD card. Only app installed was Skype. Anything else I can try? Or is this now looking to be a faulty phone?

Get a replacement. Bring it to the shop. Show them that there is nothing in there, and then insert the microSD and show them it reboots. Ask them to test with their own microSD.

At least then they know its something wrong with the phone and your warranty should cover it.

Hi all, just an update on the fault. I ended up getting a replacement phone, and the new phone doesn't have this problem at all, even with using the original transcend MicroSD card. Just a heads up for anyone else who experiences this same fault.
