Phone security

So just got a new mi a2 what security app do you guys recommend. Something to keep away pop ups and malicious apps off my phone. Also keep my storage clean of junk.

The most important security tip is to be careful what you install and where from. That's more important than any security app.

I use neither any security app nor any cleaner app (I have SD Maid installed, but can't remember when I last opened it). But if you must have a security app, remember that by their nature one of those things has access to everything on your phone, so stick with brands who have legitimate business models that extend beyond phones and avoid companies like Cheetah Mobile who make their money selling their users' data to spammers.

As said above, the best security you can have from your phone is yourself.

Common mistake quite a few make is side loading apps (grabbing an APK from a site and installing it), always stick to apps only from the play store.

Even then, if you're not too familiar with the developer, glance through the reviews and permissions. Like @Hadron said, Cheetah Mobile is a well known developer, but they also give out your information for spam purposes.

A lot of the 'security' apps tend to blow your phone up with unwanted ads and push notifications anyhow. I don't use any security apps, you shouldn't need to either if you're mindful of the information given in the thread.
