Help Phone stuck on start-up loop !

Yesterday my phone had low memory and was playing up so I restarted it and ever since, it's been stuck on the start-up screen where it shows 'HTC quietly brilliant' then my operator '3' logo. It will keep repeating until I take my battery out. I can't get past this stage. ):

I have tried taking the battery out for an hour/2 hours but that hasn't changed anything. I got it this March. But I can't find my receipt at the moment and I'm actually frustrated about this.

I've heard you can press the volume button whilst turning it back on before the loop, and it should take you safe mode. mine doesn't however, it goes to a bootloader i think ? With the options 'recovery' 'fastboot' etc. Not sure what safemode is.

Really tempted to select 'fastboot', though I don't know, does it reset the phone to factory settings and I lose all my stuff i.e. contacts, text messages ?

- also for the past week or so my phone has been telling me to update software but i have been postponing it. Do you think this is the problem ?

If you enter into recovery, you can select to do a Factory Reset.
Unfortunately, yes, you will lose all your data. Your contacts and apps are saved through Google, so you'll be fine with those but texts and photos (unless they were backed up) will be erased.
