phone wont charge

I have the droid Motorola a885 and I cant see the battery life on the top of the screen also it says my phone has 5 percent and it been on the charger for about half hour. what do I d

Shut the phone off. It's a battery charger, not an external power supply for the phone. If it's supplying power to keep the phone running, it can't supply enough power to charge the battery.
