Phone won't start.

Hi, my phone won't start. What do I do? I've read to force a start by pressing the volume down and the start buttons together for two minutes, but this doesn't do anything. The phone is about five years old so perhaps I should get a new one. Any recommendations?

Leave it on charge for an extended period: if a phone runs really flat it won't start and will be very slow starting to charge (as a phone always runs off the battery, not the charger, you need to get a minimum level of charge before you can start it). If that's the problem no button presses will make any difference.

I'd not bother with strange button combinations. If it won't respond to a simple few seconds of the power button (or, worst case, 20 seconds of the power button to force a restart) then pressing volume keys as well isn't likely to make any difference.

I think the vol up button may not be working. To turn the volume up I was having to press the vol down button and then increase the vol on the slider on the screen. The phone is detected by my PC (it plays a sound when I plug it in). But nothing appears in Explorer.

I charged it up all night just now and it still wouldn't start.

It could be that you have an issue with the buttons and or the contacts that they activate.

Dust and other debris, and remnants left behind from moisture (even just from a humid day) can accumulate to make buttons nonfunctional.

There are a couple of things that I would try, keeping in mind that this is a rather old device and that all annoying issues will continue to increase as the device ages.

First, try exhaling a few large, moist breaths into the buttons on the device.
Then work the buttons, expecially the nonworking ones, repeatedly.
Move the buttons around a bunch of times, both pressed and not pressed.
Do this all over again a few more times, then try to start the device.

A quicker, more drastic approach can be had with common starting fluid (either) from an auto parts store.
It sounds horrible, but it works amazing for cleaning electronics.
I have used it extensively on sensitive sound equipment with excellent results and no problems.

Here is the warning: STARTING FLUID IS EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE!!!
This cannot be stressed enough.
You MUST use it outdoors away from any and all sources of spark or fire.

After the spray has been used in the buttons, work them as before until the device is dry.
Repeat the spray and the working around of the buttons again.
Be sure that the device is completely dry and aired out by leaving it outdoors for awhile.

Starting fluid drys very quickly, but you want to be sure that no fumes remain before you try to start the device.
You can smell the fumes easily.

Also, at this age of the device, the battery is likely to need replacement- so keep that in mind.

If the breaths into the buttons works, then this is a temporary fix that won't last long.

The starting fluid gives long lasting results, quite possibly solving the problem.

If the battery is easy to replace, then it is most likely due for that.

A device of this age should be replaced soon, as modern technology will make it so that even if the device was in perfect condition it will no longer perform basic cellphone functions.

Starting fluid..... interesting idea. Never heard of this solution. Would you pour it onto the device? Or use a clean rag and pour some of it on it?

It comes in a pressurized can.

I know that it sounds caustic or terrible in multiple ways, but after I tried it I was convinced.

Ever have older electronics with a 'crunchy' sounding volume knob?
Fixed.

Even on my bass and guitars, also on the amps that I use.
My CB radio.
Boomboxes with crud in the switches.
Even sprayed out an entire mixing board from the '70s that was crunchy and had dead spots in all the sliders- the thing worked like new again.

There is the 'professional' stuff- Peavey makes a product called Funk Out, but it is incredibly more expensive, at least $20 for a small can- whereas starting fluid is in a large can for $3 - $5.
Also, anything sprayed with Funk Out will need frequent respraying, like an addiction- but I get virtually permanent results with starting fluid.

Once again- this stuff is some of the most flammable stuff you can get.
Be sure to use it outdoors away from any sources of ignition.

I prefer a hot, windy day.
Makes the stuff dry up fast.

Force Restart your Phone.
Do a Hard Reset
Re-Flash the Firmware From Scratch
If you tried all the things to turn on your Phone and still your Phone will not start, go and visit the phone repair store in your neighborhood Or It might be time to shell out for a new smartphone if all else fails. If you are from the USA, I would suggest iFixScreens.
