Try reseating the sim.

If that doesn't work, test it in another phone. You may need a new sim, as they do fail sometimes. You could also test a different sim in your phone.

You don't say whether this is an intermittent problem or permanent, new sim or phone, or whether the phone is locked to a carrier. These could all be relevant.
