It can be very awkward trying to take pics hitting the button on the bottom of the screen exactly. Are there apps that allow you to use volume buttons or just touch any part of the screen?

Yes, Camera360 (also) uses the volume rocker as a shutter button.

There are also apps that can make the entire screen act like a shutter button when tapped anywhere.
