Photon Gaming

I currently have an EVO3d and the photon is going to be released within my 30 days. I'm wondering what people are thinking about the tegra chips vs what Qualcomm is running.

From what I've seen the Droid x2 and the Atrix have been getting mid 2500s in quadrant. I can only assume that this is due to nvidias gpu and not raw processing power. My evo is getting right around 1900. I realize that this might be due to the qHD display and sense 3.0. Now, the photon will also have a qHD display which will probably bring scores and gaming performance and scores down.

What do you guys think will be the winner as far as gaming goes?

:confused:Atrix has a QHD display, so does X2, so does Droid 3, so will Bionic.

And the justification of the QHD bringing the scores down is from where? I'm thinking maybe you meant pentile display, not QHD.

Gaming on the photon looks pretty darn good to me:

Sorry, didn't realize that the x2 also had a qHD display.

Also, the qHD display is supposed to use 35% more processing power than the likes of the Samsung screens from what I've read. Here is a quick quote from another forum.

"qHD screen use's 35% more gpu processing power than an 800x450 screen *wvga, so just add 30% more processing power & it's about as close to equal the mali400."

I guess it has to do with the amount of pixels you're pushing at a higher resolution.

And i never had a problem with the Motorola screens, couldn't even tell on my OG Droid.

If you going to connect you phone to your tv and or use a Bluetooth controller then go with the Photon. Just keep in mind that it will have problems running in 1080p, all tegra 2 phones have this issue.

If your going to just play on the device, go with the EVO 3d, I have all the 3d games and they are a blast to play.

Hope that helps.

So, let me get this straight,

The Photon has the ability to hook up to a HDtv, but not enough processing power to handle it well

And the Evo has the processing power to handle it, but it does not have the capability to connect.

Couldn't you just set the Photon to Run 720p through the HDMI and still have a decent picture without running into processing problems?

As far as playing games on the phones go, I do not think you will see a real difference between the two except for the 3D which gives most people headaches to look at because they tend not to follow the basic rules of reality which makes your brain hurt.

However, with the greater range of overclocking ability the snap dragon may be able to hold on a little longer when the new latest and greatest comes out. That is if you are not worried about turning your phone into a very hot brick. You could always use it as a hand warmer if something does goes wrong :D

Well, you can turn off the 3d effect in all the games on the evo 3d. and you can always use the hot brick to cook eggs or boil water if your stove breaks. lol

as for the tv, yes you can connect an evo 3d to a tv and it plays 1080p great but it can't be used as a controller like the photon can. Unless you root it, of course. ;)

and the photon should be able to play games just fine at 720p.

Quite honestly, I'm less worried about battery life on the Photon than I would've been with the EVO 3D. I never really had huge issues with my EVO's battery life because it lasted long enough for my needs, but all of my family and friends that have Motorola smartphones seemed to get better battery life than me, which is something I'm looking forward to compare.

Thing is, your thread is about gaming specifically, so I can't say I have a lot of input with regards to that simply because I don't use my phone to play games that much (if at all...words with friends or angry birds I play on occasion, but not a lot).

The biggest advantage with the Photon in the gaming department is true out of the box HDMI gaming with a Wiimote. The HTC line of phones that have sense cannot connect a wiimote due to the BT stack being all screwed up. Also the 3D has to be rooted and someone has to port HDMI mirroring over to the 3D from the Evo.

so essentially the Photon can play games VIA HDMI and Wiimote right out of the box. Also the Photon being an Tegra device has tons of games that have higher quality graphics due to the tegra's ability to handle higher pixels and textures.

So if gaming is your thing then the Photon, or any tegra 2 device, will deliver more and this has been proven, and not just someones "fact".

....would prefer the PS controller over a wii controller

The nice thing about the Wiimote is that the classic controller hooks up to it as well. I have seen several videos of people using it with CM7 and games.

There are just so many selling points for me with this phone and the gaming ability with the high quality games is enough for me.

Also being an middle aged person, my wife finds it funny that I want sunday to get here now yet I'm always complaining the days are to short and I'm getting older quicker. I think she is going to have me committed lol :p

Normal 3vo phones don't run hot, do connect to HDTVs via HDMI, mirror out of the box without root, and have VERY long battery life. And a phone designed for 3D performance is no way lacking in the graphics department.

The Photon's gaming advantage may come in the form of Tegra Zone games, as well as the Wiimote abilities.

Both phones will run warm if running intensive games that drive the processor hard, and hot if run to maximum capacity. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

By the way -

I've been talking back and forth with a guy at Ingenu, who are developing a Bluetooth controller called.the Easymote. It looks very promising as it gives you the feel of a retro SNES controller, and works very seamlessly with some Emulators. Developers are slowly getting on board to allow external controllers to work with their Android apps and the Easymote is no exception. It will even allow you to shoot out a quick text reply in the middle of a game without having to change your settings.

Im looking forward to see the finished product. Ingenu is very customer oriented and extremely community driven.

Speaking of other controllers for gaming on Android EarlyMon check this out....

Phonejoy's new gaming controller for Android, complete with dual-analog sticks now

This looks very promising for those that have phones with a BT stack that wont allow Wiimote connection.

The main reason I like Wiimote connectivity is that I already own several and the classic add on. So this saves me money. But also the flexibility to change up how the Wiimote buttons work.

The Phone Joy looks like the OnLive controller. Hilarious that HTC is showing that the Evo 4G and also updated Sense 3 on the 3vo to allow keyboad/mouse HID interactions, but missed the mark for the Wii.

No question about it, I like the Wii. Grandkids have one, I've been back and forth about getting one for our house. So, I think I'm beginning to take an interest in this area...
