I haven't used the SGS, however my wife has one. I think that after you plug the USB into your phone and computer, you need drag down to top bar thingy (where you see new notifications). There should be an option asking if you want to `mount` your phone to your pc (or mount as USB mass storage, or something like that) - select it. Afterwards, when you go to your computer, it should look like an external usb drive, which your computer should automatically ask you if you want to explore (or you can try going to computer/Removable disk/DCIM/Camera, or something like that), where you should see your photos!
I will check (with my wife's phone) when I get in from work and leet you know if that's how it works!
