I read in a ZDNet review that the moto g 2015 will turn on the screen (but not unlock) when picked up, bumped or wiggled. Is this a built in feature or is an app required? I am familiar with the twist and chop gestures for camera and light respectively which work very well with practice. Thank you!

Yes, it is called Moto Display, and it partially turns on the screen in a low-power B&W mode to give notifications, it also does this when a new notification arrives if the phone is idle and sitting face up, since the phone does not have an notification LED. It works fine, has no noticeable battery impact for most people and can be disabled if you wish.
