Picked up a G1

Just picked up a G1 with firmware 1.6, build DMD64. Should i just leave it ? Is 1.6 the latest official firmware ?
Whats the easiest way to load apps without root ?

I think 1.6 is the latest official for the device.

The easiest way to load apps is the Market, unless I'm missing something in the question.
