Help Picture Messaging MMS

When I get sent a MMS picture message I get a message from vodafone telling me to download it to my phone, this is fine if you have internet availability at the time. Can pictures not come straight to the phone? I have a brand new Galaxy Ace (2.3.5).
Do i need to alter settings anyone........

For sending and receiving MMS indeed you need internet connection. So there's nothing wrong with your settings.

On my Galaxy Ace on the O2 network you can only send & receive MMS when you have your data turned on. Doesn't work on Wi-fi.
Therefore when I get a notification that I have an MMS, I turn on my data, click on 'download' within the MMS message and then turn the data off as soon as the pic is downloaded.
