Are you using the stock messaging app? When I get a picture in a text message, if i tap on the thumbnail it opens in the gallery app and i can zoom and scroll.
Oh, now I understand. What you are seeing is a "feature" of the messaging app that comes with the phone. It is displaying images as a slide show, even if there is only one (yes, it's silly). The only way I know of changing that is to use a different messaging app like Go SMS or Handcent.
