Pimlical for Android - Calendar

Heard Pimilical for Android (phone client) was just released. Anyone using it? Like it?

I'm a long-time DateBk user and am excited!

I don't use the desktop client; I have the Android client.

It works well with Google Calendar. I like it so much that I actually gave up one thing I have come to look for in all my PIMs: to-do list cloud sync.

It allows you to link contacts in your address book to meetings and/or tasks. It also has floating tasks, just like Datebk.

I've been using it since he first released it maybe three weeks ago. It's very good, and as an old DateBk user, I think he's coming about as close to that DateBk experience as you can come given the vast differences between the Palm and Google Calendar platforms. It is still a work in progress, but like was mentioned above, the dev has already released several updates, tweaking features and fixing bugs.

From the limited amount of playing with other calendars for the Android that I've done, it looks like Pimlical is already far and away the best out there, with a ton of customizable options. There are still some features I'd like to see added. But for what it is right now, it was easily worth the money for me, and given the developer's track record and responsiveness, it should keep getting better.

Well said. I agree.

Can I use Pimlical for Android in synch with my Google Calendar and not use the desktop Pimlical at all? I've got a bit of a mess, I'd like to start out the new year with just the Google Calender and Pimlical, and ignore the old Google stuff I imported via Pimlical - I'm thinking I can delete those calendars and start new, with new calendar names - does that sound like a plan? I don't care about the history, that can stay on the desktop - and in the Palm desktop.

Yes, you should be able to.

I agree, you should be able to. The only thing that makes me nervous about doing that is that Pimlical Desktop provides the ability to back up calendar data locally. Not having a lot of experience with Google Calendars, I'm not sure I trust relying on them as my only backup. I use my calendar as my primary business calendar, so I can't afford having appointments and info disappearing in the clouds, without some local backup option.

But if that isn't a worry for you, or if you feel secure enough with GCal (and like I said, I'm speaking out of relative ignorance of GCal, they may be very reliable with your info for all I know), then you should be fine with your plan to start fresh with Pimlical Android and Google Calendar.

Well, what I thought I'd do is get it all set up in PimlicalA and then go into PimlicalD and wipe it all out, after disabling my Palm Desktop somehow. Then I can relink, but I don't see myself using the desktop for much other than a repository. Thank you all, I'll do the install and see how it goes.

Love it -- as a very recent convert from a Palm Treo 755p, I was waiting for this app with baited breath! Definitely did not disappoint. There was a version there for a short while that was generating random "Fake event" entries in the calendar that I was worried was going to be a deal-breaker for me, but good ol' CESD rectified that problem before I complained about it. Haha. Now that's service and support!

Definitely the best calendar app out there at the moment. Touch Calendar is excellent, too, if you just want a prettier front end for the stock calendar and don't need all the extra features of Pimlical.

Does it support widgets? If so, how are they?

I used to use DateBk way way back with my Treos... I'm thinking about it again, but I mainly use my calendars from the home screen now.

Thanks for any info

I don't believe it has a widget yet, but it seems like CESD is updating the app every few days, so I'm sure they'll be coming soon.

I currently use Pimlical as my calendar app but use Touch Calendar's widgets. I actually really like Touch Calendar, too. If Pimlical had never come to Android (and/or I never had a PalmOS phone) I'd probably only be using Touch Calendar.

Yeah, back in the day when forums first started appearing on the internet I would use a different username for each site. Now? I'm too darn old to keep up with all that so I even use the same avatar.

Thanks everyone! I'm excited but need the calendar to be 99% stable as I use this for professional reasons. Everyone feel it is this stable?

I definitely feel it's stable.

It uses the same database(s) as the stock Google Calendar, so if it ever started doing something you didn't want you could just go back to the default calendar app or even just go to the Google Calendar via the website.

Have any of you had any problems since installing Pimlical for Android? Such as duplicated reminders on March 13th, the upcoming DST switch date?

I have to update my "review"/recommendation in this thread -- I have moved on to CalenGoo and I am no longer using Pimlical/A for several reasons:

1. It is stable but it's too Beta in terms of feature set for too long now.
2. Some of the features that have been implemented (like gestures) are cludgy and non-standard, and should be optional and enabled/controlled via settings.
3. A better distribution and update avenue is sorely needed.
4. They desperately need to get the support forum off Yahoo Groups.
5. It needs it's own database...like yesterday. Otherwise you're stuck with the significant limitations of the Android calendar database.
6. You shouldn't have to buy the $20 desktop version to get icons.
7. A lot of memory errors and problems when scrolling through a calendar.

CalenGoo has been out about as long as Pimlical/A, but CalenGoo is refined and definitely not the same Beta-ish experience. That's probably because CalenGoo is an iOS port, but on the other hand Pimlical/A's predecessor was the very successful Datebk series. CalenGoo has every feature I'm looking for in a calendar and has it NOW, whereas with Pimlical/A I will have to wait for most of those features. I will keep an eye on the Pimlical/A development, but I see no reason to wait for features that are already available and well-implemented in another app.

Incidentally, CalenGoo has rather nice widgets. ;)

I'm having sync trouble. I've only noticed it in the last couple of days, since I installed PimlicalA but I've only had the Droid 3 for a week (Migrating from Palm Pre Plus which was such a disappointment because it wouldn't run DateBk6!) This is a much better calendar, much quicker, much more direct to use, as was datebk, but if the data doesn't all sync, I'm sunk.

Some events from one of my google calendar's sync, and some don't. On the website, not on the Droid. Where did they go? Is it PimlicalA or ?

There is a Yahoo Group for Pimlical which should be able to help you. I was a long time Datebk5 user and used Pimlical Desktop to migrate all my Palm calendar data to google. I still use Pimlical/D for backup purposes only. I would have liked to try Pimlical Android, but at the time it did not work with my version of Android. I use Calengoo and have found that I can do everything that I need it to do. I go on the Pimlical Yahoo site from time to time. It seems that Pimlical Android still has some issues.
