Root Plan on rooting....help!

Hi guys,

First off....I've found this forum to be fantastic! I'm a relatively new member but have been looking at the forums well before joining. I have some questions on rooting. I have an old Droid 1 that I plan on rooting. I've been doing a lot of research on the topic with this being my first attempt at it. I plan on installing "SuperOneClick" to root it and then installing a custom rom. I'm thinking of going probably going with Cyanogen as the customer rom....or using one of the ones from xda developers.

I've found a lot of good tutorials on the step by step for SuperOneClick and Cyanogen so I'm good on that. But what I haven't been able to find/maybe don't understand is, do I need to install a customer Kernal in addition? or should I?

Also, are there any other programs or options on the phone that I should be installing or doing on the phone to avoid Verizon sending out overnight updates that reverse my root?

Do I need anything else to keep my phone rooted?
Once the phone is rooted, am I able to visit google play and download everything like I would on a normal stock OS?

Thank you in advance for answering. I've been searching the forums and google for answers to some of these questions but can't seem to find a good answer. So I most certainly tried before posting as I know that can be annoying to some.

I originally learned about rooting after trying to find a way to increase my internal memory as now-a-days....I can't do too much on 250MB of internal memory as Facebook and Google Maps etc....all run on internal and it fills up fast. So I was looking for a way to take and use space from my 32GB SD card and partition 1 or 2 GB to the internal memory....then I learned about the wonderful world of rooting....I want to bring this dinosaur of a phone into the new age :)

Hey there JG126, first off let me welcome you to the community :)

Now to get to your questions...

As long as you follow an unlock guide and then put Cyanogen Mod on it with the proper Google Apps that will be all you need, no need for a kernal.

Verizon will not reverse your root either. I have rooted a couple phones on Verizon and they have never have given a care in the world that my phone was rooted.

Again just make sure to pair your phone with the correct version of Google Apps.

I usually follow the guide, the first time i root a new device, and i usually follow the Cyanogen Mod guides, as they are really good and helpful :)

Here is the one for your phone: Motorola Droid: Full Update Guide - CyanogenMod Wiki
