Play 720p .mkv files

Up till now, I still haven't found a player that can play my .mkv files. I've got tons of 720p .mkv movies (max. 1GB so it's not that they're heavy streams) but I can't play any of them and I'm not really keen on re-encoding every movie I've got...

Rockplayer, Moboplayer, Vplayer, stock videoplayer... they all fail playing the .mkv files (without crashing or getting more than 1fps)
On another note, even h.264 720p files stutter like Rowan Atkinson:(
I was expecting a litte more from a dual core tablet to be honest

Has anyone got any idea on how to get .mkv files playing?
 
Im not sure if any of the players will read a mkv, but i know it reads mp4 containers, if the video was encoded correctly. From what I've learned, the problem with stuttering has to do with variable bit rates and fps. Also high profile h.264 settings also cause trouble. I've started using handbrake to encode my movies. There's a thread on the XDA forums that has a preset built just for the TF, as well as, tweaking settings. Might want to check it out. The short answer to your question is either recode the files or transcode them with a media streamer (TVersity, PS3 Media player, etc...)

So might as well have bought an iPad...

I agree with kampfwolf09 100%. You should use the right app and encode the movie correctly. I have my mkv movies and play great using RockPlayer.
 
Gave Rockplayer a try and it works like a charm with .avi! I noticed that my .mkv files were way too large to carry around on my TF anyway so I guess that's not a problem.

Hence, I might have well just have bought an iPad because one of the main reason for buying the transformer was the ability to copy paste all of my media without the need to convert... too bad:(

I guess you will need to sell the Transformer and get an Ipad then.

When I try to play mkv files with Rockplayer, it shuts itsself down without even showing 1 frame.
Moboplayer shows 2 seconds of picture (at 5fps tops) and then gives an error and shuts down...

That's what I did. But then as good as it was, I sold off the iPad 2 too and switched to the new Asus 1215B with AMD E450 APU. I miss not having the touchscreen, but overall it just works so much better. Not having to bother with all that conversion and file size limit is a relief! And good lord I can even play a bit of Crysis 2.
