Play Store App Updates

Play Store is getting sloppy about updates. I've had problems with 2 astronomy apps (both paid). One one - Play couldn't connect to the right server for a download - today the other app says that it is a newer version than the one I have.
I found out about the newer version from the developer. Play hasn't told me yet I have an update - it just says "installed"
Even if I did update everything automatically - in neither case would I have received updates.
I usually get the info from Cloudy Nights forum.
