Play Store Tablet App Support

Chicago64

Newbie
Hello,

I'm looking into getting a Galaxy Tab S as my first tablet soon. In my opinion, it defeats its direct competitor, the iPad Air/Mini in just about every aspect except for tablet app support. This is pretty much the only con I've found while researching comparisons between these tablets. Is the tablet app support on Play really that much worse than the Apple App Store? Also, what all is included in "tablet app optimization?" Does this mean apps have to be stretched to fit the screen and therefore lose resolution? Are there performance factors?

I just want to make the best decision and get the best tablet possible. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

~chicago64

well it is hard to say a whole lot about a tablet that is not out yet......from what i read that the apps that are not optimized for tablets will work and will stretch to fit the screen and might loose some resolution......but i think it is minimal.

not really sure what you mean by tablet app support. if there are issues with apps (which i find very rare) you can contact google (who have great customer service IMO) or you can even contact the dev's......some are good at responding while others suck, so it depends.

not sure what "tablet app optimization" is so i can't comment on that.

anyways i hope that helps.

Thanks for your input, but what do you mean it isn't out? It's out in the US at least.

oooops my bad guessed they released it on the 27th and i did not see the news on it......hmmmmmm might have to go to best buy to check it out.

Yup. The reviews seem pretty pleased with it. Many are calling it the greatest tablet Samsung has ever made (which you hope would be the case with each tablet generation, but it's not always).

Chicago64, to answer your questions:

Is the tablet app support on Play really that much worse than the Apple App Store?
In my opinion, it really isn't any worse than the Apple AppStore, in some ways it's actually better. It's the same because there are many android apps which are tablet optimized, meaning that they were made to fit/work perfectly on a tablet screen and aren't "stretched to fit". Also, with the Android/Google Playstore, they separate the apps based on which device they were made for, in other words, if an app that you are wanting to install on your tablet wasn't made for your tablet, you won't even be able to install it and if the app was made for your tablet, the system will install the tablet-optimized version automatically, no need to be guessing whether or not it would work on your tablet.

What all is included in "tablet app optimization?"
I believe I might have answered this question above.

I believe I also answered this question above

Are there performance factors?
No performance factors/issues that I know of and I have the first edition Samsung Galaxy Tablet and it's still going strong!!!!!

One final word, not sure if you are aware, but, one cool feature about Android that trumps the Apple Appstore all-day, in my opinion, is the ability to log into the Google PlayStore website and install any app to your android devices automatically/wirelessly. How it works is that you sign into Google Playstore website and then find the app you want to install. Next, you select the Install button. Now here's the cool part: Once you select the install button, you should see a list of all your android devices(if you have more than one). If the app is compatible with your device(such as your tablet), the device will be selectable and if it isn't it will be greyed out, not allowing you to even install it. That's how the system automatically determines if apps are tablet optimized/compatible or not. Hope this helps.
