Play store won't launch in android 4.4.2

Just bought a samsung galaxy note pro 12.2 with android 4.4.2
There is no 'play store' preinstalled.
Download the .apk file and installed it.
Successfully installed and icon appeared.
tab the icon, it won't launch.
Search all over the internet. can't find a solution.
Tried reset factory settings, download .apk files from three reliable sources. None works.
Anyone here got an idea how to fix it?
(found a solution but for older android. Tried that too, ie to enable the download manager, but the download manager is already enabled)

Don't they have to be installed as system apps though. Or not?
You're probably right - installing as a system app inherently grants more permissions. Which ones are in one of my posts, I don't remember and didn't feel like searching.

But - the OP does have the other-sources installer working, so if anything is going to get the Play Store running on an unrooted device, it's probably that.

How you can buy a genuine Samsung product without Google Apps pre-installed is a complete mystery to me.

It is an Open Handset Alliance requirement so I honestly have no idea how this came about anyway.

OP - did you buy this new or used?

If used, it's been modified and we're going about this the wrong way.
