Playing music and notifications/phone calls

Hi, I'm not 100% sure if this is the right forum to ask this but I'll give it a go.

I have a Droid 4 and I've never particularly had any problems with it until recently. This problem is more of an inconvenience though. I drive alot for work and I plug in my phone in an AUX jack on the car radios and listen to music via Spotify. I also sometimes have Google Maps/Directions going. Usually when I'm playing music and the directions speak, the music will stop and it will say the directions then go back to the music where it left off. Same with phone calls or text message notifications. I liked it this way. As of a few months ago it no longer does this. Now it lowers the volume of the music but whatever notification is happening will be at a very low volume. I can't hear directions or the phone call noise at all, just lowered music volume. This is mostly inconvenient for the directions since half the time I'm driving to places I've never been before. I think there was some sort of update around the time this started happening so I think it may have something to do with that, but I'm not sure. I've searched around the settings but can't find anything that seems relevant.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to change this? Appreciate any feedback.

Check the individual volume controls on the phone, because music and media does have a separate volume control to ringtones and notifications. You should find them under settings > sound. There's three individual volume controls actually, ringtones and notifications, music and media, system.
