Please don't hate me! I have a couple of iPhone questions for my android buddies!

So I've been toying around with the idea of trying out an iPhone and I have a few questions for anyone on here who knows about them.

First of all, almost off-topic but does anyone know of an Apple forum that's similar to this one? (one that consists of cool people who can give friendly advice without blatant fanboyism) Although I'll NEVER leave my beloved android forums, i'd probably rather ask any iphone related questions there, since there's not exactly a "traitor" category :D:p

ANNYWAYS, here are my questions for those who know the answer:

1.) Hotspot - when you jailbreak an iphone can you use unlimited mobile hotspot like android? or tethering even?

2.) Google Navigation - I notice on my ipod touch there's no google navigation in the app store. There's only some navigators that cost around 50 bucks! any reasonable solutions here? I LOVE google navigation.

thanks for the help!

no google nav similar to android. Also there are some apps out there that give hotspot with jailbreak, the one I used was mywi(i believe)

man that kinda sucks, i can't believe they don't have a good navigator =\ i wonder if you can use vznavigator

Trooooooooooooooooooooooooooooolllllllll-ing!!!! :D

LOL.. but seriously, the Apple forums have the same demographics as this Android Forum cluster, Tommy: a little bit of everything, which is very cool.

Just don't mention Android or Windows in there. :D

The new ones don't have Google Nav anymore? Weird... my old and I mean OLD iPod Touch I think it was made in 2008, has Google Nav.

you can get google maps, but not the spoken voice turn by turn nav. or if you could I never figured out how to get it working.

You can try the MapQuest app. It's free, does turn-by-turn, and text to speech. Not as nice as the Google app, but not a bad alternative for iPhone users that want something free.

ill have to give it a try! there's something i'll miss if i switch... free apps. lol it seems like most of the apps on my touch cost $, which i don't mind paying, but I like that android usually has a free version you can try out first

For a free turn-by-turn navigation app on the iPhone, take a look at Waze. I personally haven't used it, but it's highly recommended ... and includes "social" features that give info on traffic reports and speed traps and such.

yes.. you can jailbreak and get free hotspot functionality... but my friend who has this... said that apple is always trying to lock it back down... every time you update so that you can get bug fixes or what not; you will loose this function.. and have to wait till someone finds a new way to jailbreak it again.

Jailbreaks come faster and faster these days. Currently, we are waiting for a JB for iOS 5. You can already go tethered and a semi-tethered iOS 5 JB was announced a day or so ago.

Exploits have been discovered at a phenomenal rate and that will soon lead to a stable untethered iOS 5 JB.

Some things cannot be jailbroken due to how Apple handles signing and the need to save your SHSH Blobs. You have a limited window of opportunity. Also, lots of schemers currently selling a JB for iOS 5 and the particular company is an outright fraud.

The devs are quite good at finding reliable jailbreaks, however.

They have the advantage of so many working on a single platform. So, I guess, there is another major advantage of being defragmented.

i wont really need hotspot till I go on a 3 month trip starting in january, so i'll prolly just use it stock until then, when I'm sure there will be a jailbreak available ;)
