please explain to me.. what is wrong with this picture?

Won't I don't get is why the fuss over a non story?

Slow news day possibly. Our media has become a perverted one-upmanship shell of what it used to be. It's more about who can draw in a bigger audience to view a trainwreck of a story as opposed to who can bring in the best thought provoking stories. I call it the Fox news phenomena. It's as if they realized that Jerry Springer type of stories will draw in the ratings and have created "infotainment" as a result. Don Henley sang about it a long time ago, Dirty Laundry....

Consent forms are common, if not standard, practise in the UK nowadays.

As for why it happened, simple oversight because teachers want to focus on running a classroom not an office? Meh.

Which is what I do, but then I'm in a Chinese school, so this UK and USA politically correct consent form for photos stuff doesn't apply. Teachers are always taking pictures of students and putting them on the school website. http://xmmgzzx.com.cn

In related news...
Spike Lee tweeted the address of the obviously racist photographer.

Seriously, such non news making headlines is the game of the day. Then we have to talk for days about how ridiculous it is, fueling more of the same type of 3rd rate jouralism. We are also helping the media continue this ridiculous behavior. Would writing an email to editors of stories like this help? Probably not but it's better than just talking about it.

It would seem the logical solution would be to ignore dumb articles like this but will that even do any good? It's a lose/lose situation for everyone but the news and the ones who get their 15 minutes of fame.

Fox News, seriously?
They're often as guilty as the rest but you know this racial hypersensitivity sh*t is perpetuated by the left and ironically Fox News becomes your scapegoat. Lol

I think with facebook and everything else in the internet, it only makes sense to have a consent form for class pictures.
I do think it is U.S./ U.K. politicaly correct thing (in Japan we dont have it), but I understand what could happen, and that the school need to evolve its policies with technology.

As for the smiley face, it is very tacky.
Tacky and distasteful. But I am sure it should ave been a bigger problem if it were a yellow smiley or cartoon face of a white kid.

Why cant they just say, "they did a shitty job on this picture. the camera man sucks".
& the teacher should have used their common sense and made the non consented kids sit on the edges of the back rows to make photo shopping easier. They clearly lack foresight and risk management. :P

I'm curious why you say this...would white parents be crying racism and causing a huge controversy?

I would think the kid who didnt have the consent form is black, and if you slap a white face over him, they would complain "why put a white face over my kid's face?".
i am Asian, and if they put a white face over my face I would feel uneasy, but at the same time, if the put a yellow face over me I would be upset too.
They could just blur it out...

In the end, the kids without consent forms should have just sat out.

Because that would be unfair to the photographer, who seemingly did just as he was asked; apparently he offered to re-take the shot, but the school declined (at first) and asked him to edit the photo.
I wouldn't be surprised to find he put the smiley on just to make a point that what the school wanted was the wrong way to fix their mistake, and would make his work look shoddy.

I have been a pro photographer for many years. I agree that this is most likely what was going on. The kids could have been photoshopped out and a beautiful seamless job could be done but it would be a lot of work. Time is money.
Photographers are always hearing "you can just photoshop that right?". It is much better to have everything right before the shoot is done.
It would take far less of the photog's time to reshoot. Color him/her disgruntled.
To all that think anything can be easily photoshopped...show me.

I just "photochopped" your smiley, painted him yellow, gave him hands, hid him behind a couch, and instead of a sarcastic eye-roll, I made him look guilty of something.... :p ;)
