This is my first smartphone. After I got it charged & activated, I spent an hour putting my contacts in. then I realized it had taken all of my contacts from gmail. When I un-synced gmail, all of my original contacts were gone. When I search for them, it says no results and asks to search all contacts. When I do, it showsy m gmail contacts again and whatver individual contact i searched. Why are gmail contacts popping up still? Why did it hide my real contacts? Where are they?!

You did not mention what phone you have, but here's the deal with Android.

Normally, since Android is a Google OS, it syncs to your Gmail to backup the contacts in the cloud. Basically, your contacts, when you save to your phone, are saved to Gmail by default unless you specifically set it to not do so (method may vary among phone models). So if you unsync your Gmail contacts, your contacts would disappear too since they are saved to Gmail. If there are certain contacts in your Gmail you do not want to appear on your phone, simply place your phone contacts under a group, then going to the display settings of your contacts app, you may disable showing all Gmail contacts except for that group you want.

Syncing to Gmail makes it easy to transfer contacts since if you get a new Android phone, simply activating it with your Gmail account would make the phone download the contacts.

Not real clear just what you did. Sounds like you entered contacts as Gmail contacts, so when you unsyced Gmail contacts your added contacts also disappeared.

Do all your contacts including those you added show when you enable Gmail contacts?
