please help, contacts problem, so frustrated

so ive never owned a smart phone. After i got this, charged and activated it, it took me an hour to put all my contacts in. Then i realized it synced my gmail and didnt want that so i un-synced it...and it deleted all my contacts! if i search for a contact in composing a msg, it will find it. But if i search in the contacts or in the screen to make a call, it says no results and asks if i want to search all contacts-if i do that, the gmail contacts pop up again! Where are my real contacts hidden?
