Help Please help me backing up my phone.

I apply a whole strategy. No root required.

All your contacts etc. are backed up to your Gmail account (in Google's cloud) and will be synced with your old or replacement device when you log in with that account.

All files you created – texts, pics, vids, docs, notes, apps' contents, etc. – are on your SDcard.

Move as many apps to the SDcard as possible (many preloaded apps can't) using the free app 'App 2 SD'.

Create .apk files (on the SD card) of all apps using the free 'Supermanager' app.

Create a backup set (on the SD card) using the free 'Backup Everything' app (somehow can't find it in the Play Store right now...?; but I have it installed and it works on Android 4.0.3; want the .apk file?).

Do a monthly data dump (copy) of the entire contents of the SDcard to your laptop or desktop machine's harddisk/SSD (and trash the previous one). I use a USB tether and simply drag & drop. But you can also use all sorts of other file transfer protocols, including wireless and/or remote. These data won't be readable on your laptop or desktop machine, but they will be restorable to an SDcard under Android, and that's all that counts.

Takes about 10 minutes a month to maintain in my experience.
