Take off the back cover and remove the battery and look at this sticker (different phone in pic but sticker is similar):

Check the IMEI number on the sticker, then replace the battery and power up the device and go to "about phone" in the menu. You'll find the IMEI number there. If it matches the number on the sticker, it is a likelihood the phone is genuine.

If you're buying them from Chinese wholesalers and trading companies, more than likely they'll be fake. But on the other hand if you're buying them from reputable sources like Expansys, they'll be legit.

you can also ask to do the trade at your local carrier. the one that you plan to activate it on.

they can help you check to make sure it is real.. and in working condition...test it.. and activate it.

only after that.. do you pay the seller.
