So I'm new to the whole Android world and I purchased a Samsung Galaxy s3 on Monday. On Tuesday I plugged my phone into my computer and it said that there was a firmware update. So I decided to update. However, I left it plugged in all day and all night but the download would stop halfway. So I had no choice but to unplug it and see if it will work. My phone, of course, went into recovery mode and I tried to do the emergency update. But once again, my computer wouldn't do anything. So I ended up having to exchange my phone to get a new one.

Now with this new one I'm a little afraid of upgrading the firmware. So I'm just wondering if I can get by without those firmware updates and just do the phone software updates through the phone like the settings>about device> software update thing? I also can't seem to get my phone and computer to link wirelessly through kies air, I'm using windows vista. Any idea on how I can set that up too?

Your help will be much appreciated! :)

You should be able to do all updates wirelessly, I have... Unless I'm missing one myself.
My s3 has not touched a PC in the four months I've had it.

Same here, i get the update notification and then allow it to install using Wi-Fi.

I have it set to only do it by Wi-Fi -

Settings
Scroll to bottom of screen
About device
Software update
Wi-Fi only (tick)
Update.
