Help Please help - prevent syncing ALL gmail "contacts"?

Lulu3

Newbie
I'm completely new to Android so please bear with me!

After setting up my gmail account, I noticed that it was syncing ALL my gmail contacts. And by "contacts" I mean anyone I have ever emailed since I first opened my gmail account. When I click on "Not Assigned" under Groups, there are hundreds of email addresses that I don't even recognize (every company I ever contacted etc etc.). I don't understand why these come up as "contacts" as they are not stored as contacts in my gmail account, it's just history. I already started manually going through and deleting them - is there a way to select more than 1 at a time and delete in bulk?

By un-checking "sync contacts" under the gmail account, will that prevent this from happening from now on out? Is there anything I should be doing in my gmail account on my PC to prevent Gmail from saving all this history?

Thanks in advance!

Hello lulu yes by unchecking sync contacts any new contacts won't be synced automatically but if you add someone to your contacts and have to redo your phone and don't sync you will lose that contact
I hope that helps
Have a great day!

Ok thank you. As an alternative, though, is there a way to simply shut off "keep history" (or something to that effect) in Gmail settings on my PC? If Gmail didn't store every single email address then I could let my phone sync with Gmail.

That im unsure of :( sorry i can't help there

u can go to gmail contacts and manually clear off the contact list. thats what i did. and u can manage your contacts on google contacts web too.

all have to be done on desktop browser tho, doing it on your phone is really tedious
