Help Please Help. Receiving MMS with wifi turned on.

Lurker
Hi Everyone. Long time lurker first time poster. First, thank you for this site as it has managed to solve all of my GS3 problems. However, I have been trying to find a solution for this for a while now but I cannot, hence my post.

My setup is standard ROM, wifi always on and connected to home network, mobile always on.

I know I cannot receive MMS via wifi. I do not want to do that. I do, however, want to be able to receive MMS with wifi turned on. Last week I could do that.

Before I got the ICS update last week, when I was sent an MMS message I would get a text with a "Download" button. I click the download button and happily view my picture.

Now, after ICS, I do not receive a text alerting me that there is an MMS message. No text, no download button.

I am with Bell, and they are no help at all. They told my to turn off wifi to receive a MMS, which works but is not acceptable. Wifi must be turned on.

How do I revert back to my previous setup where i get a text alerting me of a MMS with a "Download" button?

Thank you.

Edit: I can send MMS with wifi on - the wifi icon at the top changes to carrier whilst the mms is sent, then reverts back to wifi.

Edit 2: I have tried this on 3rd party message apps including GoPro and Chomp. No dice.

Thanks for the quick reply.

While i cannot find:

Messaging>Settings>Always retrieve>Off

I can find:

Messaging>Settings (Multimedia message (MMS) settings)>Auto-retrieve

It is unchecked.

I checked the box, went back in, saw the box was checked.

Power cycle.

From wife's phone I sent one MMS with pic and a then a plain SMS.

SMS came through, no MMS.

Maybe the issue is with attachments in general?

I sent myself three texts from wife's phone:

Text message: went through fine.
Text message with vcf (contact attachment): Text went through without the attachment (??)
Text message with pic: No message at all came through.

If you are on WiFi, your main APN will not be used.

What should work is if you create a second APN using only the MMS details from the first APN. The type should be "MMS" instead of "default, supl" which your main apn will probably have.

What Carrier / Country are you in?

Go to settings (wireless and networks), more settings, mobile networks, access point names..

Confirm your apn matches these:

If so, good. Create a new apn using these settings except call it BELL MMS and in type at the bottom, ONLY. Have MMS.

When you've saved the apn, you'll see your existing apn has a radio button and is selectable but your new one hasn't (if all went well)...

Try that.. it *should* work... essentially you're copying your apn but changing the type. On my s3 though I cannot copy apns like I could on other phones...

OK i created the new apn as per the instructions above and got the apn without the radio button - check.

NOTE: My original settings on the stock APN do NOT match those listed in the link.

I can now receive MMS with wifi turned on :)

Thank you!..

I have one issue with a specific person (wife) sending me texts and am on the phone with my carrier to see if its a Bell issue 'cause that aint right'.

Thanks +1
