I have posted this in the sam fware forums with no response as yet and I'd really like to get my phone up and running, and you guys seem to know what you're talking about ;)

Hi

I have a Samsung Galaxy S. About 2 weeks ago it suddenly started getting caught in a loop - it gets stuck on the very first boot screen and just loops. I have tried VOL UP + Home + Power and wiped the cache, also tried doing a factory reset - nothing has worked. Still looping.

So I was going to try flashing it and upgrading the firmware. I have myself a copy of Odin and I downloaded what I *thought* was the latest firmware - keep in mind that 1. I have no idea what I'm doing
biggrin.png
and 2. I have no idea what my last known firmware was or how to find out.

I am in Australia...I am assuming there is a difference as to what firmware you use - I downloaded I9000BVJVC [21.10.2011][Android 2.3.5] and unzipped it, only to find that what is in the Flashguide PDF and what I have in terms of the files/file names is completely different. I don't know if that was even the right package to download anyway - I just wanted to see if the file names lined up with the guide.

Can someone please guide me through this? I am a bit lost without my phone and I desperately need it for the house move I am about to do!!

TIA

Thanks so much! That's exactly what I was looking for!! :D

Now for my latest problem....Odin is continually crashing every time I try to put the files across. As soon as I press start it just jams up. Kies is not running.

Any ideas?

also you need to start odin first, and than connect usb to phone and if all is well, the comport will turn yellow on older versions and green on latest version

Thanks :) Tried your Odin version, still freezes :/ Not sure what the hell to do! Another thing this time, too, was that when it picked up the mobile it turned blue, not green - does that mean anything?

its ok, i got it mixed up, it will turn green after flashing is completed. I think the problem is in the rom unzipping, what are you using RAR or 7zip to open the rom package you downloaded? If it get corrupted odin will not continue

NOTE:-always restart odin when if it fails and you can even flash the entire rom without unzip by loading it as PDA

follow this guide

can you copy and paste what is written in the message , when you try it?

The first time I tried I used WinZip...didn't work. Then I realised it was a rar file and deleted the first copy, used Winrar. Still not working. Tried again just now and the same story - it connects, it says

<ID:0/005> Added!!
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5..Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..

And then it will suddenly stop - the top bar says (Not Responding) and that's it.

ok, just flash as one file meaning do not unpack what you downloaded, put it as PDA and try

Ok...just tried that....it wouldn't let me choose anything but a .tar.md5 .smd .gz or .tgz file under PDA, so it won't let me put the unpacked folder in there.

This is so frustrating! :/ Thanks heaps for all your help and ideas so far :)

ok, I think, you fail to note

How to extract

Windows: Double-Click to extract for .exe files or install and use 7zip to extract on .7z files.

I did use 7 zip in one of my early attempts with no luck...just did it again then...still (not responding) message comes up. I was wondering though...should the files look like this?:

PHONE_XWJW1.tar.md5 <--- see how it's both .tar and .md5? Shouldn't it just be one or the other?

Its normal....very puzzlings as to why odin is unresponsive

The only reason for this is the file is corrupt, you need to download that file again from another source.

Ok - I have unpacked that one - but now I'm confused when it comes to putting the files into Odin - the file names in that package are:

boot.bin
modem.bin
Sbl.bin
cache.rfs
factoryfs.rfs
param.lfs
SS_DL.dll
zImage

So I'm not sure which ones go into the PDA/Phone/CSC fields?

Ok....scratch everything I just said - I forgot to disable Kies before I tried it that time.

It worked! Odin did its thing and it says PASS! and completed and everything looks fine!

Then I tried turning my phone on....same thing...it's still stuck in a loop :/ *sigh*

Could something be damaged inside? It's been dropped a few times in its life. I would have thought that if it was damaged it wouldn't even try and boot, though. :/

I doubt it, nothing is damaged, its a matter of getting it right with the right ROM, even expert developer can screw this up :D, ran into three of them last few weeks....so try a get a good read on flashing and attempt it again.

1) NEVER tick partition , IF you do not have pit file to flash
2) Do not tick or untick anything in odin

IF odin says passed and still does not boot...means something is lacking

I guess from what you posted last about unpacking, the problem could be , you should not unpack but just flash the whole thing in PDA.
