To backup your internal SD which contains your photos, videos, docs, and other user data:

First off, forget about the airdroid desktop application for your PC. You don't need that.
  1. Install the airdroid app on your phone.
  2. On your PC browser open this link: http://web.airdroid.com/
  3. In the airdroid app on your phone in the upper right click the square containing a line.
  4. Now scan the barcode that's in the PC browser window with the airdroid app.
  5. You are now connected to your PC with your phone.
  6. In your PC browser click on the "Files" icon in the Airdroid web interface.
  7. Then in the left sidebar select "SD Card".
  8. Now highlight every folder or just the ones you want and click "Download".
Airdroid desktop client is the same regardless of Operating System because it runs in the browser.

Nope. ;) They have an actual desktop client--for Mac and windows. (View as 'desktop site' if you're on mobile.)

The browser method doesn't involve, or need, their desktop client, therefore it's OS-independent. The OP referred to using their 'backup' option--which relies on the desktop client.

Never seen that, I only use the browser.

Why not use the browser? To backup photos, videos, and user data the browser does the trick.

Direct quote from that link:
"No need to install any client, no restriction to any system, you just need a web browser to enjoy all the AirDroid features to manage your devices. The best solution during travel or for managing devices on computer without the desktop client installed."

^The browser is just as much a client that happens to be cross platform.

Well, as noted, I've only ever used the browser method. :)

But from stepping through the process to 'backup' this is what I see; note the very last text (bottom left):

I've only used the Web Application too.

That's just a link to their site where you can download the Windows/Mac application or go straight to the Web application. Once you land on the page they seem to encourage the use of the web application. All 3 do the same.

Try it. On your phone, choose their 'backup' feature. Share your results. :p

But seriously, I have no idea what their 'backup' result would look like, or why it would be better than simply multi-selecting what you want to copy. I'm guessing that it doesn't create a zipped file that you then have to unzip, and that it automatically picks the files to be saved, based on their being photos or videos--the two types named on the Backup page.

I still prefer the down-and-dirty method of doing it by directly copying/moving files/directory structures to my networked computers' hard drives. But Airdroid is a handy choice for people who can't do that.

Moody, I'm moving on. I gave the OP my answer in post #26 which was my only concern.

My bringing up networking takes Airdroid out of the equation. It's a much simpler and more direct way of moving files and directories around.

As for a full backup of your phone...no. The only way I know of doing that is with a Nandroid backup. This article explains what it is. But as I recall, it's only for rooted devices. (I haven't rooted an Android device in years, so I'm pretty much out of the loop.)

To summarize: anything having to do with windows, including Airdroid's desktop client, I can't help with. If you're networked and can connect to your computer(s) from your phone, I can help. (But not about windows networking...I don't know if that's still as awful as it once was, but, no. However, other people here can help. :D)

Did you try the steps @GameTheory outlined? That should work.

It will create a zipped file on your computer; this archive will maintain the integrity of your directory structures. Once you've unzipped it, you can move things around as desired.

I have no experience with any other app similar to Airdroid.

As noted, my preferred method is to use a file manager [on Android] to copy or move files [to any of my computers]. Again, if your computers are already set up for networking, then this method should work very well for you, too. I emphasize 'should' because I can't speak to any OS besides Linux.

If you're not networked, you can look for online guides for how to do it...but I really think using Airdroid would be easier. Just use a web browser [on your computer] to connect to Airdroid [on your device], and then follow the steps GT outlined.
