Help Please Help. Whatsapp issues. (Vodafone)

I am using the Samsung Galaxy s3 and I have Whatsapp on my phone. I've been using it for the past two months and I live in Italy. I do a lot of texting back to the states with it and I just got my bill today and it was 320 euro. It was saying that I've sent over 600 texts using my network and not my data like Whatsapp claims to do. Can somebody please help me to figure out how to solve this issue?

That sounds very strange indeed.
Ive been using whatapp for 3 years and not had or heard of anyone having charges like that.

I would be interested to know what the outcome is if you get to the bottom of it. Sorry I can't help.
