 Hello all, i agreed to help a friend in rooting his hero ( he saw my evo 4g lte rooted and liked it) so i have it rooted using the z4 method. Superuser is installed i also have astro, terminal emulator, and busy box, but i CANNOT for the life of me figure out how to get a custom recovery on the phone. Every single download i find leads to a dead end.. Any help would be greatly appreciated : )

You will need to find an older version of ROM Manager and sideload it and install it. Unfortunately, the current version of ROM Manager requires Android 2.2 and up, which is why you are probably having difficulty finding it in the Android Market.

I say Android Market because the stock Sprint HTC Hero ROM is Android 2.1 which does not support the Google Play Store. Once you flash a custom recovery, such as ClockworkMod Recovery, you can flash an Android 2.3 ROM and get the Google Play Store.

Thank you... Any idea where I could find a good download.. Everywhere I have looked has led to empty downloads.

Sorry. I am not one who likes to link to .apk files which is why I did not reply.

The main reason is because there is a paid version of ROM Manager. So, I was worried I would accidentally link to that one, which is against the rules. I will say that I found a link to ROM Manager after doing one simple Google Search. Try "ROM Manager Android 2.1 apk" in your search criteria.

Ive looked high and low and i still cant get a recovery on this thing. Im about to give up lol this shouldnt be as hard. Ive rooted/installed recoveries on numerous phones with ease.but this seems impossible.

I am sure you will figure it out. Someone is bound to set you in the right direction.

There are plenty of guides out there to even do it the old fashioned way. That involves using the Android SDK and ADB.

I finally found a way to get a recovery on the hero! That was scary! You were right. Though I had to do it through adb after digging though hundreds of xda threads :)

Uh. I sent you a Private Message yesterday with additional help.

I guess you did not see it? Well, anyway, I am glad you got it figured out. I would recommend flashing CyanogenMod 7.2. It is fast, stable, and battery efficient even on our aging hardware.

Now you know I saw your pm after I had it done. that's how my luck works. Thank you though your help was much appreciated.

You are quite welcome. Sorry I did not get that little bit of information to you sooner.

To be honest, it is good to know how to do these things the hard way. Learning to use the Android SDK and ADB is useful.

Yes it definitely is. When I first downloaded adb I had no idea how to use it. Come to find out I didn't even have it set up correctly. But after a couple youtube videos and reading a couple write ups its not as hard as it seems. Definelty useful.

Exactly. I grew up using command line interfaces on computers so I felt right at home using it. :)

Besides, it is always nice to have a backup plan. Haha. :D

And besides.... Don't you feel way more cool entering com and lines then using an app for something? :D

Can you please send me that email? I'm having such a hard time getting to my hero's recovery screen. My phone was rooted with z4root at one point but i decided to set it back to stock. I did the famous HERCIMG.zip from xda site (cannot remeber the RUU) It all seems as it was working But I noticed that the phone was acting very slow so I decided to re-root the phone using the z4root. I have no idea what caused the problem but now I'm experiencing parse issues with some apk and can not access my recovery through rom tool box paid version or even try to install a new one. When I power the phone off and a press the power + the home key I get the annoying red triangle with the (!) in the middle. I have try to used the Aruwizard and got error 140. I have been reading this adb but it's seems so confusing. Please help! Willing to donate something to the cause if the problem is resolved. Thanks

I get into recovery by pressing and holding the volume down button and then power. It should bring you to your bootloader and then you can select recovery.

You probably don't have a recovery flashed anymore though if you flashed HERCIMG.zip. Are you S-OFF? You can flash ClockworkMod recovery via HBOOT if you are. If not, you will need to find an older version of ROM Manager, sideload it, and then flash ClockworkMod Recovery from that. There are more challenging ways to do it via ADB, but I am trying to make this easy for you. Let me know.

Thanks for your quick response; I have been out sick, maybe for lack of sleep trying to fix my Hero. Anyways, I went and downloaded an old RM (1.6) and ran it. Once I got to the part where it ask you to install the cwm recovery I hit it, when it said that Recovery was installed I did it again; I did that like 3 times. I went to HBOOt and recovery was there; finally. However, I tried to install a new rom and got an error; can't remember right now what it was. I'm thinking it has to do with the fact that I am still S-ON which leads me to my next question...how do I get S-OFF? I rooted my Hero using the Z4Root method and I know Z4R does not get you S-Off. I tried using Unlocker and got an error; was I supposed to uninstalled Z4Root then do Unlocker? …What do I have to do? Thanks for your help...

S-ON and S-OFF should not really matter with the Sprint HTC Hero. This handset was made before HTC started creating cryptographically signed bootloaders that required S-OFF to get around. All that S-OFF nets you in the Sprint HTC Hero is the ability to flash unsigned images directly from HBOOT, though the HERCIMG.zip that I mentioned above does NOT require S-OFF, anyway. Having S-OFF IS useful, but not necessary for someone who just wants to flash custom ROMs and kernels.

Anyway, if you could tell me exactly what ROM you are on, I could probably better help you. The Sprint HTC Hero never had an Android 1.6 ROM. It went from Android 1.5 to Android 2.1, skipping over Android 1.6. My recommendation, with the information I have from you now, would be to get back to OEM Android 2.1 with HTC Sense, and then root via Z4Root, and then finally flash a recovery, so you can flash custom ROMs.
